Around 70 people enjoyed great fellowship, beautiful scenery, good food and weather. It was a bit warmer in the daytime than last year, and a bit cooler in the evening. A chapel campout is not a time of just sitting around your campsite. No, you spend a lot of time sitting around someone else's campsite! As we see Vicentito, Catalina, Lina, Jim, Vicente (on the rock), Haig and Nina doing here.
It is a short walk from the campground to Lake Billy Chinook.
Around the campfire Friday evening, Jeremiah and Caleb know where they want to be ... with Gramma and Papa!
Saturday morning dawned bright & sunny.
Enjoying breakfast are Jason, Janelle, Dida, Haig (in the shade) with Seamus, Paula & Gabe.
Some people on a campout manage to get up in the morning with bright, cheerful faces, while others manage to, well, get up in the morning. In the former group, we have Trevor, John, Sarah, Barbara, Stretch & Evy.
Haig, Stretch and Jon went golfing nearby on Saturday. Haig, again in the shade, is describing either how close he came to a hole-in-one, or maybe, a fish? The fish that ate his golfball???
Later in the day Saturday, several of us went on a trip to see the balanced rocks. These are huge boulders precariously perched atop pillars of rock.
Some natural occurence, according to God's plan, placed them there. In the close-up of this one, you can see how there are just a few square feet of contact between the boulder and the pillar below.
We saw these rocks last year, and they are more fully described on the web page about the 2000 annual campout.
Back at camp, preparations were under way for our Saturday evening dinner together. Here we see Sue, Ruth, Paula and Carrie busily at work,
while a few feet away, Mike and Dick look on.
For our dinner, Master Barbecuers Clint and Haig prepared very tasty pepper-steak and chicken for everyone!
The grill is a custom design especially made for Grace Bible Fellowship. It is 4 feet wide by 2 feet across and was a group effort by Haig, Vicente, Jim D., Mike, and Nathan M. This was the first time it was used, and you can expect to see more of it at future campouts, workdays and other activities.
Seated together here are Fritz, Caroyln, Martha and Tracy.
Craig came all dressed up for dinner, accompanied by Pat.
If you look closely, you'll see that these young people were not posing for me, but for someone else. Off to the side is Jim, while in the back row are Janelle, Sarah and Dustin. In the front are Berlin, Jennie, Barbara, Clara and Dida.
Jim and Nina enjoy the fellowship.
"Pssst - Paula's cheesecake is here - better hurry!"
Here we see Carrie, Dick & Sue, and seated, Tracy and Martha.
So, what might Jim and Berlin be discussing here? Possibly a full day of boating on the lake. They brought their boat on the campout, and spent over seven hours Saturday giving people rides on the lake.
After dinner, the evening cooled down some, but Jeremiah and Caleb managed to stay warm!
There was a bit of wildlife around the campground, including this deer on Sunday morning.
At our campsite we saw a bird tentatively identified as a yellow-breasted chocolate-lover. That's what he went for, the chocolate cake we had sitting out!
Cove Palisades State Park sits in a gorge, with high cliffs to one side, the lake and more cliffs on the other side. A trail leads to the top of the rim behind the campground, and then in a loop around the rim. Early Sunday morning, Ruth & I made the hike, taking in the scenery. Here, Ruth looks down upon the lake, with Mt. Jefferson in the distance.
Back at camp, we found Allison, Peggy, Al and John enjoying breakfast.
We had our Breaking of Bread meeting Sunday morning in the campground's amphitheater.
David Kemple spoke on being bold as Christians.
He shared from Philippians 1:20 - 21, "According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." David explained that since Christ died for us, we should live for Him. To live for Him is a lifelong endeavor. Fear of embarrassment can be a hindrance to our boldness, and so we should pray for boldness (Ephesians 6:18-20). David referred to several examples: Jeremiah, who prophesied in the face of death, Stephen who died preaching, and Paul, who preached even in chains.
Before breaking camp, I managed to get a picture of Haig and Seamus.
We would like to extend thanks to: Thank you for reading about our campout. Please accept my apologies for any names mis-spelled, or left out, or not quite correctly matched to people. I wanted to get good pictures of everyone, but unfortunately, missed some. Maybe next year!
If you have any printed pictures you would like to contribute to this page, I can scan them for you and put them on here. If you have digital pictures, please bring them to me on a diskette, if you don't mind, rather than by e-mail. Thanks.
